Happy New Year OP Families! I hope you all had a nice, restful holiday season. This month here at OP we are focusing on justice and fairness. I feel this is especially appropriate to begin the year talking about these important traits. This is especially appropriate due to MLK Day occurring in January in which we honor a man that stood up and fought for justice and fairness in this country.

With the holidays quickly approaching we are focusing on kindness this month at OP. This is an important trait all year round but especially important during the holiday season. We want everyone here at OP to recognize that it is important to be kind to one another. We have stressed its importance through class meetings, character education, the morning news, and our book display highlighting kindness throughout them. We have asked our students to demonstrate random acts of kindness and to make at least one person smile a day by throwing kindness around like confetti! We are very fortunate to have such wonderful families at OP that demonstrate this everyday. We thank you for your support as well as modeling for our students how important it is to be kind! Here is a fun resource if you wish you practice random acts of kindness at home with your family! http://kidsstuffworld.com/2015/02/22-kid-approved-acts-kindness-can-week/ Additionally, Bright Blessings has contacted me asking for your help! Bright Blessings is a wonderful organization that helps families and children with homelessness and poverty right here in the Charlotte area! The services these children receive in Charlotte would not be possible without the donations from supporters. If you wish to donate please click on the link below. bright blessings link Wishing you all a happy and healthy holiday season! Here at OP we want to promote a system wide culture of safety, high engagement, customer service and cultural competence. As a part of our school improvement plan, we intend to do just that! In order to reach this goal, each month of the school year will represent a different trait in which we will educate our students and highlight throughout the school. We have asked the teachers to incorporate the character trait of the month into their weekly classroom meetings. This is also integrated within our character education special area class to feature each trait with activities and lessons. The morning news will also highlight our monthly trait, reminding our students how important these traits are! Feel free to check out our book display in the media center outlining books that focus on our character trait of the month for the students to check out and read! The monthly trait themes are as follows: September - Respect October - Responsibility November - Honesty December - Caring January - Justice and Fairness February - Citizenship March - Courage April - Perseverance May - Hope Parents - if you wish to implement this month's trait at home please check out the document below! October is National Bullying Prevention Month. Here at OP we are united AGAINST bullying and united FOR kindness, acceptance, and inclusion! Wednesday, October 26th, we initiated #UNITYDAY2016 off with a Safe Walk to School hosted by Mr. Soler! The students were asked to wear all orange in an effort to UNITE one another as well as to send a message of support and hope; a nationwide celebration. The students also pledged against bullying by writing their choice of their name or something kind on orange strips to form chains hung around the school!
