Hi! My name is Kimberli Henry and I am originally from Eldred, New York. I received my Bachelor's Degree in psychology at Oneonta University in Oneonta, NY. I was eager to become a school counselor and pursued my Master's Degree in school counseling at Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA. I have enjoyed my counseling experiences thus far at OP and feel extremely blessed to be working here! We have wonderful staff, students, and families here at Olde Providence and I am excited to be here this school year!
Alongside offering counseling services I partake in a number of other responsibilities such as:
-504 Coodinator: I am responsible for ensuring all students academic success by providing accommodations when
needed.
-MTSS Coodinator: I work alongside the MTSS team to determine the best strategies and interventions for
students academic success here at OP.
-Volunteer Coordinator: Coordinate volunteers with OP and play a role in the North Star program.
-McKinney-Vento Liason: Assist with families who may be experiencing homelessness.
The counseling program at Olde Providence Elementary School includes individual, small group, and classroom guidance activities to help meet the needs of all students. The goal of our counseling program is to help foster positive learning experiences for students, parents, and teachers. Counseling sessions are developmentally designed and available for all students. Our comprehensive approach to school counseling is based on the American School Counseling Association's National Model which provides us with three fundamental domains of counseling: Academic counseling, Personal/Social counseling, and guidance and Career counseling. Please click HERE to learn more about ASCA's National Model.
Each domain works to address the diverse needs of our students and their families. These three components further reinforce OP's motto, Hand in Hand, We Build The Future, which strives to promote a sense of unity, leadership, and effective student development. As a school counselor, I will address each fundamental domain in three forms of counseling:
1. Individual Counseling: I will meet with individual students (one-on-one) in a confidential setting. I will address their various needs and concerns using a variety of creative and effective approaches. Individual counseling is developmental and is designed to help students explore themselves, and others, most often pertaining to academic and social/emotional concerns. *Students, teachers, and parents are able to make referrals for individual counseling.*
2. Small Group Counseling: Students work in a small group setting with 4-6 students who share common issues or concerns. Students within these groups benefit from meeting together to share ideas and receive support. Possible group topics include: grief, friendship, social skills, self-esteem/self-concept, divorce, anger management, and problem solving/conflict resolution.
3. Classroom Guidance: This counseling approach meets the needs of ALL OP students. On a monthly basis, the school counselor will collaborate with grade level teams to provide meaningful counseling activities and resources pertaining to the character trait of the month. All students will be actively engaged in these activities through skill development and communication with their peers.
